Founded in the summer of 2004, Radio Free Peterborough is an all volunteer-run Internet Radio Station exclusively featuring the music of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

RFP aims to be a cultural heritage resource for music that falls below the radar of the commercial music industry, but still sounds great. Especially when you know everyone you're listening to.

We want you to start your own radio station, so go grab a copy of our D.I.Y. Internet Radio document. It's free, and so is everything you need to get started. If you have a windows computer on a fast connection that can play music, you're already most of the way to being a radio station.

The Radio Free Peterborough Manifesto:

Once upon a time, people just played music because it was fun and it made your friends get up and dance around with big dumb grins on their faces. The party went on for aeons, but then a particularly ugly monkey figured out that you could get other people to actually pay money to passively consume what they used to participate in. We 'aint knocking it - without it, there wouldn't be nearly as much music in the world as there is, but there comes a time when the tools we have just don't cut it anymore, and it's time to discard them for something better.

The do it yourself ethic has always been front and centre in the Peterborough Arts Community, and frankly, in the city as a whole. Radio Free Peterborough began as the answer to the question "I wonder how much Peterborough music you could put together in one place on shuffle?" As you can probably tell, the answer is, "a metric crapload!" - and we're just warming up.

The modern 'big box' commercial music industry seems to have little room for anything that might not be a big seller. Alas, public companies are at the mercy of their shareholders, so their decisions aren't so surprising - they have to make the next quarterly profit target, or their goose is cooked.

But what about all the musicians and bands and, uh, novelty acts that may not be 'worthy' of a platinum record, but are still a hell of a lot of fun to listen to, and are an important part of our collective musical heritage? Enter Radio Free Peterborough.

Radio Free Peterborough will introduce the rich musical talent base of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada - past and present, to audiences both local, and global.
