And we're off! (to Mexico)Well, as Brian posted in his blog yesterday, he is now on his way to Mexico to spread the Radio Free Peterborough concept to international development. Yesterday, Brian and I started with a nice greasy breakfast at the Speakeasy Pub in Peterborough and then made our way to my place here in Toronto by bus. We enjoyed our in-flight movie Invincible Shaolin (ok, we watched it on my laptop with a headphone splitter) and then set about some last-minute shopping for a dedicated external hard drive for Brian's powerbook. We finally found what we were looking for, and after a little frantic re-packing and a final gear tech run, I packed Brian full of a big dinner (baked chicken breast, fresh gnocci with home-made roasted red pepper sauce, and enough steamed asparagus to choke a goat) and sent him on his way. He should be in Mexico by now (it's about 6:00 pm EST) and trying to figure out where he'll sleep. It's very very exciting to see our humble little project growing into an international development concept - but it only makes sense: people need mechanisms for their voices to be heard. Traditional broadcasting technologies are very expensive, and resource-intensive to maintain (a radio transmitter uses a LOT of power!) - but an Internet broadcast initiative can hit the whole world with minimal technology infrastructure requirements. Witness Trent Radio: 15,000+ listeners from 62 countries in 9 months for $0. Not too shabby. I also finally got to meet Lester Alfonso in person for the first time. We've emailed back and forth a lot, and I've gotten things in the mail from him - but I'd never met him in person until Saturday. Ahh - Internet. :) We're hoping to hear from Brian via his blog in the next few days some time - so stay tuned! |
