Collision/CollusionPeterborough New Dance presents PETERBOROUGH (April 16, 2007) Collision/Collusion is Arzoo Dance Theatre’s latest offering, choreographed by the company’s Artistic Director Deepti Gupta. The current work explores the lines and spaces of kathak (traditional Indian dance) in new forms. Its title refers to the coming together of various media (digital, traditional/classical, film, dance) and the inevitable collision between cultures. It evolved out of a series of random, anarchic encounters Ms. Gupta experienced over the years, in the streets of Toronto—encounters with the city’s art and artists. The piece will feature original music created by Sundar Viswanathan, a jazz saxophonist, composer and music scholar currently teaching at York University with lyrics by Tricia Postle a Toronto poet and medieval music specialist. Both artists originally hail from Sudbury, Ontario. The audio visual component will be co-created by film and video artists, Lester Alfonso (Peterborough, Ontario) and Matthew Boughner (Hamilton, Ontario). Joining Ms. Gupta in the dance will be Kathak dancer Reshmi Chetram from Markham and modern and jazz dancer Melissa Kramer of Toronto. Deepti Gupta on Collision/Collusion: Art grows. It occurs. Like a seed planted, works of art are invisibly forming through chance encounters in life and also through deliberate interactions. Artists are only the medium through which the Art is manifest…chance encounters…on the proverbial streets of Toronto have resulted in these new dance pieces…these works represent my journey in dance over many years. 7 pm, May 6 at the Market Hall, 336 George Street North. Tickets are available at the door or in advance by reservation. Call 745-1788. |
