Another milestone: Radio Free Peterborough has now been on the FM Airwaves for 50,000 hours!

As of the Trent Radio Annual General Meeting last weekend, RFP has now been pumped out to the lovely people of Peterborough and area for over 50,000 hours thanks to the fine folks over at Trent Radio - 92.7 CFFF FM.

We look forward to our next 50,000 and we very much appreciate the support we get from everyone at Trent Radio, and in the Peterborough community at large.

A new free recording is available in the free music section: Phillip Kummel's 'Corridor'

Thanks to the great generosity of Mr. Philip Kummell, we have s new recording available for your listening pleasure in the free music section of this website.

You must have a free RFP account to download the recording. Register or log in to download.

Thanks a lot Phil!

Happy 7th Birthday Radio Free Peterborough!

birthday.jpgSeven years – somehow we’re still on the air. My love letter to my beloved home town continues. This was a bit of a holding pattern year, but the downloads of our RFP and Trent Radio apps continue to be strong. It’s very rewarding (although not financially) to know that people from around the world are being exposed to our local Peterborough culture for free. Nothing makes me happier than to log in and see that there are active listeners from around the globe rocking out to Peterborough music, spoken word and audio art. Thanks to everyone for your kind words and emotional support. We're not going anywhere any time soon - so stay tuned.

For those of you who are newcomers to the RFP experience, we are a 100% volunteer project with a total operating budget of $0. I pay for all of the expenses for RFP out of my own rather shallow pockets and do all the server maintenance, software maintenance, website maintenance, accounts management and catalogue management myself without a penny from anyone. I get help from the kind folks at Trent Radio with new material and troubleshooting. If you want to show your support for RFP, we’re always happy to accept a donation of any size – donations > $50 will get a tax receipt. If you’re short on cash, we’d love it if you would print out our poster, photocopy it and put it up around town (legal postering only please)
to keep RFP in the public eye.

Here’s to a happy and healthy year 8 for all of you out there in radio land.

Spammers: don't waste your time (or ours)

Whenever something happens here on RFP (a new user creates an account, someone posts something or comments on something) we get an automated email notification. Within a few minutes of a new account having been created, we log in, check the email address of the new user against a list of known spam email addresses and if the new account's email is listed, we block the account - forever.

So, don't waste your time trying to spam this site with your "advertisements" - they will NEVER see the light of day.

To the rest of you, I see lots of traffic to the various goodies here on the RFP site - so we're glad you're enjoying the site and station.

46,000 hours of FM broadcast time and counting! Tune in to Trent Radio 92.7 FM in Peterborough and surrounding area for lots of local listenin'

Enjoy!

Happy Sixth Birthday RFP! We're celebrating with two new iPhone apps

candles.jpgSix years go by so fast. If RFP were a kid, we’d be in grade one now. Hard to believe! My love letter to Peterborough continues with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. In fact, this year looks to be our best ever! So far, we’re over 4,000 tracks of all-Peterborough audio, and we’ve enjoyed over 46,100 hours of FM broadcast time via the facilities of Trent Radio here in Peterborough.

What’s new here at RFP? Lots of stuff! Free Music, IPhone Apps and user blogs for instance.

Firstly, we’re very happy to bring back the “Free Music” feature of our site. This feature was first brought online a few years ago, but we had to take it offline because of bandwidth restrictions and because some individuals were abusing the feature. We've secured additional bandwidth and implemented a system to prevent automated content posting, so you are free to gorge on Peterborough audio goodness.

Also, new accounts were suspended for months because of persistent spam problems. I’d rather have no content and no users than have RFP used as an advertising platform for criminals and scuzzballs.

That’s all behind us now though - you can now sign up for an account and download the free music to your heart’s content. What sort of music do we offer there? Head on over to the free music section and see for yourself. You’ll need an RFP account to actually download anything but you can browse anonymously. Accounts are completely free of charge of course.

Also, in celebration of our sixth birthday, two new iPhone apps!

Get our Radio Free Peterborough iPhone app and you can enjoy RFP from everywhere. This app also provides a few other features. You can send us your feedback with the click of a button, report a bug or broken song with the click of (a different) button, and participate in our “Where do you listen to RFP from?” survey with the click of yet another button. This location survey data will be used to collect information about listening sessions and plot them on a map so we can see where people are listening from. This information is not collected automatically, and will only be sent when you click the button. We’re not interested in spying on anyone - only to find out where people listen from.

We’ve also launched a Trent Radio IPhone app which will let you listen to Trent Radio’s online audio stream, send a message directly to the DJ in the booth and call the on-air line with the push of a button. Participate in the radio process from wherever you are!

Put a little Peterborough in your pocket today.

Head on over to the apps page to find links to both apps in the iTunes store. Both are Free Free Free!

We are of course, still accepting your submissions of new original audio material to add to our archive of Peterborough culture. Enjoy!

Accounts are back!! Please read me.

Sorry about that. There were some problems in the transition from our old server setup to our new one. I think we've got the bugs worked out now. Oops?

If you signed up for an account back when we were having major spam problems, you never did get to log in and get at the free music collection. Well, we've got our new server infrastructure up and running so you can now go and sign up, get an email validation and log in.

The free music section is back too! We've got a couple of other new things coming online soon, so stay tuned.

And we're back!

Our server monkies have been hard at work getting the server all fixed up and running, and it seems that we've finally got the spit, duct tape and binder twine in alignment, and we're back up on the air. Thanks everyone for your patience during this transition time.

Impending server down time,...

monkey fixing server

RFP HQ is moving! We will be moving into our new digs sometime this weekend, and it may be a week or two before we get everything set back up again. Our server monkies will be working night and day to get RFP back up and streaming. In the meantime, you can still listen to RFP on Trent Radio - 92.7 FM in Peterborough and area.

More networking fun = stream server outage....again!

One of the joys of running entirely on spit and duct tape is the constant battle with networks, switches, routers, cables and all the computer gear that ties them all together. Sometimes, the spring goes 'sproing' and things grind to a halt. Sorry for the outage folks, and things should be back to normal now.
